# Sales tax on Runpod purchases

> Understand how sales tax applies to Runpod purchases, what determines your rate, and how it appears on your receipts.

Runpod is required by law to collect sales tax on purchases in certain jurisdictions. Whether tax applies to your account depends on your location and payment method. Where it applies, tax is charged on top of your purchase and remitted directly to the relevant tax authority by Runpod.

***

## What determines whether you're taxed

Tax is applied based on your payment method country. `[CONFIRM: payment-method country or billing address — confirm trigger with tax implementation owner]` If your payment method or billing address is registered in a jurisdiction where Runpod collects tax, the applicable rate is added to your purchase at checkout.

***

## How tax affects your credits

Tax is always charged **on top of** your credit purchase — it does not reduce the credits you receive.

* A \$100 credit purchase in a jurisdiction with 18% GST results in a charge of **\$118** and delivers **\$100 in credits**.
* The tax amount appears as a separate line item on your receipt.

Your credit balance is unaffected by tax. \$100 purchased always equals \$100 in credits, regardless of the tax rate that applies to your account.

***

## Auto-reload

If you have auto-reload enabled, tax applies to each reload in the same way it applies to manual purchases. Tax is additive to the reload amount:

* A \$100 auto-reload in an 18% GST jurisdiction charges **\$118** and delivers **\$100 in credits**.

The reload threshold and amount you configure refer to credits, not the total charge. Factor in the applicable tax rate when estimating your billing.

## Tax-registered businesses

If your business is registered for tax in your jurisdiction, adding a valid tax ID may exempt you from tax or change how it is applied. `[CONFIRM: does a valid GSTIN fully exempt the charge, or shift to reverse-charge? Docs must match what is actually implemented.]`

See [Adding your tax ID](/accounts-billing/add-tax-id) for instructions.

***

## Receipts and invoices

Tax appears as a separate line on your Runpod receipt. `[CONFIRM: where exactly — receipt email, billing page, or both? Is a compliant tax invoice available for filing, and if so, how does the customer access it?]`
