Adding a valid tax ID to your account may exempt you from tax or change how it is applied, depending on your jurisdiction. [CONFIRM: exact effect per region — full exemption vs reverse-charge for India GSTIN; confirm for other regions.] Tax IDs apply to future purchases. [CONFIRM: does adding a tax ID after a purchase affect that purchase, or only future ones?]

Add your tax ID at checkout

When completing a purchase, Stripe’s checkout flow includes a field to enter your tax ID. [CONFIRM: is tax_id_collection at checkout live in production? Do not document this path until confirmed.]
  1. At the payment screen, look for the Tax ID field below your billing details.
  2. Select your country and enter your tax ID in the correct format for your jurisdiction (see Supported tax ID formats below).
  3. Complete your purchase. The tax ID is saved to your account for future purchases.

Add your tax ID in the customer portal

You can add or update your tax ID at any time through the Runpod billing portal without contacting support. [CONFIRM: is the customer portal tax ID section enabled in production? Do not document this path until confirmed.]
  1. Go to Settings → Billing [CONFIRM: exact console nav path].
  2. Click Manage billing.
  3. In the customer portal, select Tax information.
  4. Enter your tax ID and save.

Tax ID added by support

If you need a tax ID applied to a past purchase or cannot add it through the above paths, contact support@runpod.io. [CONFIRM: can support set tax IDs in the Stripe Dashboard on a customer's behalf? Confirm whether this covers past purchases.]

Supported tax ID formats

Enter your tax ID in the format listed for your jurisdiction. Stripe validates the format immediately at entry — a malformed ID is rejected before your purchase is processed. [CONFIRM: confirm the full list of supported ID types for launch. Add rows as additional regions are enabled.]

Validation and verification

Validation confirms that the format of your tax ID is correct. This happens immediately when you enter your ID — a malformed ID is rejected on the spot. Verification is a separate step that applies to EU VAT, UK VAT, and AU ABN numbers. After you save your ID, Stripe checks it asynchronously against the relevant government database. A correctly formatted ID can still come back unverified if the government database returns a failed result. [CONFIRM: confirm the exact statuses Stripe surfaces and what Runpod shows to the customer for each.] India GSTIN does not go through async verification — format validation only.
